Welcome to the Extreme Environments Webpage!
When you think of your home, do you wish it were different? Do you wish your bed was warmer in the winter or cooler in the summer? Do you wish you didn't have to walk up that big hill to get to school or shovel your driveway when it snows? Fortunately, we live live in one of the most habitable places on Earth - that is, Vancouver Island is a place that is very ideal for human life.
But what about the parts of the Earth that are not so ideal? There are many places on the planet that do not easily support life. Humans may live in these regions, but they have had to adapt to the extreme conditions that make it difficult to survive. This website will cover the main types of extreme environments and discuss the obstacles that must be overcome in order for people (and other living organisms) to survive.
Not all people live in extreme environments because the lifestyle is what they have adapted to. Many people, especially in recent years with the advent of technology and financial security, attempt to push the limits of the human body and human knowledge by exploring and surviving extreme environments. Some of the pages in this unit will describe these situations, and you will be doing a project on the exploration of some of these environments.
After exploring this unit, you should be able to identify the challenges that come with living in different non-ideal environments. You should also be able to understand some of the survival measures that people must take in order to live in extreme environments. You will be doing several group activities, which will strengthen your comprehension of the scientific process and allow you to appreciate the evolving nature of Science. After learning about these things, living on Vancouver Island will seem like being in the lap of luxury!
Below are some buttons. Click them to find yourself whisked away to the most extreme places on (and above) Earth!
