Pack your bags! You're going on a trip.
You will be sorted into groups of 4 or 5 and sent to one of the extreme environments listed below. You must research your environment, and once you become familiar with the conditions, you will make a list of what you think are the most important items to bring. Decide roles for each group member. Some ideas are:
EXTREME ENVIRONMENT PACKING LIST CRITERIA:
You need to survive in your extreme environment for one week. What will you bring? You may only bring 10 items and one bag. Any amount of CLOTHING that you wear will only count as ONE item.
- Fact finders (researchers)
- Scribe (person who writes everything down)
- Packers (people who decide which items are most important)
- Task Master (someone who keeps the group on task)

- Start by doing some research on your area and writing some facts about it that will help you to plan your supply list. You may use this site, other sites and books in the classroom.
- Brainstorm as many useful items with your group as possible. Next, decide amongst yourselves which 10 are the most important. Be prepared to present and defend your decision!
- Will you need to bring food, or will there be a way to hunt and forage for food? Consider the tools necessary.
- Look closely at your pictures and consider the climate and temperature, the topography (the surface of the land and how dangerous it is), the humidity or dryness, the oxygen supply, the altitude and other inhabitants of the area.
- Your group should make a poster of the facts and packing list for your region, but you should all make notes in your science journals.
